Our Ideal Candidate

For more than 20 years, Seichou Karate® Dojo has taught Japanese calligraphy (shodo) to students in northern Virginia. We seek a passionate and experienced Calligraphy Instructor to lead Japanese calligraphy classes for children, teens, and adults. Our ideal candidate is a skilled artist, patient educator, and enthusiastic cultural ambassador who will help our students experience the beauty, discipline, and meditative power of traditional Japanese brushwork. About Us

At Seichou Karate®, we believe that the practice of Japanese calligraphy complements martial arts training by cultivating focus, inner calm, and a refined sense of aesthetics. Our calligraphy program is open to all, regardless of language ability, and offers students of every age a unique path to self-expression, mindfulness, and cultural appreciation.

Responsibilities

  • Teach beginner and intermediate Japanese calligraphy to children (ages 6+), teens, and adults
  • Prepare engaging, age-appropriate lessons that incorporate artistic technique, kanji meaning, and cultural context
  • Model and encourage a spirit of quiet focus, discipline, and creativity
  • Provide constructive, individualized feedback and guide students in developing their skills
  • Maintain classroom order and a supportive, respectful learning environment
  • Collaborate with dojo staff to promote student progress and retention

Qualifications

  • Deep love of Japanese culture and a desire to inspire others to appreciate Japanese culture
  • High skill in Japanese calligraphy with an extensive portfolio of work
  • Accreditation and high ranking by a competent calligraphy organization
  • Experience teaching children, teens or adults
  • Japanese language and kanji fluency
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to lead by example with grace, kindness, and quiet confidence
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States

Schedule & Compensation

This is a part-time, in-person position with flexible evening and weekend hours. Compensation is competitive and based on experience.
